A natural science illustrator and artist bringing nature closer to you.

Margie Bauer, a botanical and scientific illustrator, a “zendoodler”, a fabric artist and a teacher in watercolor, pen, and mixed media, works out of her studios in Cashiers, NC, and Coral Gables, Florida.  She often studies her subjects by growing native plants at home that attract native creatures.

From her grandparents' extensive gardens in Cincinnati, Ohio, to raising plants and animals as a Peace Corps volunteer in Zaire, to her 30-year international career as a diplomat reporting on and promoting agricultural products for the US Department of Agriculture, she has immersed herself in nature.  She served as Agricultural Attaché at the US embassies in Indonesia, the Bahamas, Barbados, Bermuda, the Dominican Republic, Grenada, Haiti, Jamaica, and Trinidad and Tobago.

In Western North Carolina, she has taught various art classes at the Highlands Biological Station, where she also volunteers.  Her original artwork, giclees (museum quality prints), and cards can be found at more than 10 outlets in Highlands, Cashiers, Sylva, Lake Toxaway, Brevard, Flatrock and Asheville and she promotes her work at various regional art events.

In Florida, she teaches neighborhood children and their parents the life cycle of the monarch butterfly, using the ever-present monarchs that emerge from chrysalises in her garden.  Teaching Zendoodle and volunteering for the Million Orchid project and the Challenge program at Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden, she encourages students to experience the beauty, fragility, and strength of nature.  She has also taught through the University of Miami's OLLI (Osher Lifetime Learning Institute) and informally with various groups.

In Miami and surrounding area, you may find her cards at the Miami Fair Trade Marketplace, Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden (FTBG), and the Bonnet House.  She also promotes her work at events at FTBG and the Native Plant Society.
